OUR MISSION

First United Methodist Church of Burleson invites all people to live Christ-centered lives, build authentic relationships, and serve the Burleson community.

Our Vision

The church’s end goal and purpose is, “to go and make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” Crafted from The Great Commission, Matthew 28:19-20, and universally recognized by the United Methodist Church, this is why we exist. We are in the disciple-making business, if you will. We accomplish this through loving relationships, bold and contemporary proclamation of the Bible, and activity in the Burleson community and beyond.

At First United Methodist Church of Burleson, we accomplish this by, “inviting all people to live Christ-centered lives, building authentic relationships, and serving our Burleson community.” This is our unique vision to accomplish our mission of making disciples!

To live a Christ-centered life is to commit oneself to the values and character of Jesus, the historical and divinely created Son of God. We are called to be “little Christs” while living on this planet, living the lives, engaging the people, and loving our enemies and neighbors in the same manner as Jesus did. It simply means putting Christ at the center of all we think and do.

Building authentic relationships is more than just having casual friendships. It means creating relationships built on trust, respect, and real and meaningful conversations. It means holding each other accountable while giving space for diverse perspectives and interpretations of both Scriptures and the world around us. It means being able to sit at the table and have a meal and a conversation with those who aren't like us.

In order to serve our Burleson community, we have to get out of the church. Since we truly are the church, the Body of Christ, it is an opportunity to take the church to the community, showing our neighbors that what we believe is what we do. It doesn’t mean fixing people; it means walking side-by-side with people in their struggles and their joys. It looks like asking about the needs of our community and then partnering with others to meet those needs. It looks like taking the church to the streets.

This is who we are. This is our purpose. This is why we exist and this is how we accomplish our mission and our vision. We invite you to partner with us as we continue our journey of being good and faithful servants of Jesus Christ, together.

Our Story

First Methodist Church of Burleson was officially founded in 1888 by small groups who worshipped together. The early church purchased its first lot on the corner of Ellison & Dobson, and soon after a one-room building was constructed.

Over the next few decades, rooms were added to expand the church campus, along with a fellowship hall in the 1950s. By the early 1960s, FUMC Burleson owned the entire block.

In December 1961, a new sanctuary was completed, which still stands today on the corner of Renfro & Dobson. Soon after, FUMC Burleson was given the Achievement Award from the Central Texas Conference in recognition of its rapid growth.

In 1971, fire ravaged much of the church campus, but thankfully, the sanctuary and several rooms in the education wing remained intact. Later in the same year, reconstructed was completed, and by the early 1980s, church membership had increased to 1100.

Then, in 1990, the church campus was re-dedicated after all outstanding debt was paid, and a new building campaign began. In summer 1995, a 20-acre lot on McAlister Rd was purchased, with the bell tower signaling the beginning of construction in 1998. By 2002, the educational wing and fellowship hall/sanctuary were completed, with the old church campus at Renfro & Dobson sold to Hill College and Texas Wesleyan University in 2005.

In Spring 2006, a unification service for Kingswood United Methodist Church of Burleson and FUMC Burleson was held. Most recently, in 2014, construction of a new Youth Building was completed just behind the main building.
